Good day fellow rockers,

Highspeed Owl, a project I began last summer with a couple of my friends is coming to life. It started as a demo track for raven06 but after hearing my friends feedback it caught more attention than at first. I felt that it had potential for a concept. A concept which I have alwasy been interested in since I reside far away from my motherland and my beloved mates. The concept, which is sharing music/melodies through the internet and composing them from different places in the world is nothing new to our cyber culture. We fancy the same fashion with Milk Drop Revelation. I should also mention that there's no originator for this concept. And this isnt a band or a group. It is more of a community for people like you and me who just love exploring music in its many elements despite being stranded in vast distances. Hence Highspeed becomes this open ground to open minded musicians around the world.

Currently messenger, Justin Strollo from Rinse Repeat and Slow Moses and myself have been bearing Highspeed Owl using different gadgetry and instruments.The unit has brewed a brand new track called "yantra manra" and its 80% carved. Guitars by me, the hyptonizing flutes plus rattling thovil sounds by messenger and the inspiring vocals by Justin Strollo. We just need that last element to throw the track overboard and set it sail out in the open waters. I'll leave you to find out what this element is. The contributors ( thus far only three) believe in sharng music than producing it to the mass. It could be anyone and everyone who is musically excited, or yet is to find that out about themselves.

In the intense rush of an emergency department of a hospital, where patients in need of the most urgent of emergency treatment are hurried in; motor accident victims, patients struck by heart attacks and strokes, the adrenaline never seems to cease.

But it does. After each rough day the department settles down to a relatively quiet evening of shifts shared by both nurses and doctors tending to patients like silent angels keeping watch.

One doctor, Milinda Salpitikorala, finds it the perfect place of solitude to explore another talent of his - art.

Attached to the emergency department of a leading private hospital in Colombo, Milinda can draw on anything, anywhere at anytime but saves his talent for when things go quiet at the hospital.

You can find him at a desk lit up by one lamp, headphones on, listening to his favourite band, possibly Dream Theatre, and sketching away at a frenzied rate.

It's strange and amazing, the things that make some artists tick, the motivation that inspires them, how they get started, how they break creative blocks.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Milinda says that like most artists, drawing came to him at an early age but the difference was, he could and would draw on anything and any time, creative blocks being a thing he never had to worry about.

He's managed to remain apart from the crowd, different, 'unconventional' one could say.

Talking about his work and being an artist Milinda remembers the early days when his desk at school was covered in so much art that it resembled graffiti, the same with benches and walls, even his father's law books. It seemed his hands had a mind of their own.

The self-taught artist has never been to art class but has learned Photoshop and Illustrator through trial and error. The obvious career path of advertising never crossed his mind; he won't stand for being told how to draw, although he had created logos for local metal bands including Fallen Grace and Raaksha.

He's also set to do some artwork for the book Celestial Trilogy by Arya.

His inspiration comes from the human body and working at a hospital he's seen a fair number. He says, "Most of my art involves the human body and I'm also a big rock fan, hence the art being a bit on the dark side."

Some of his favourite pieces are Hansaya (a drawing of a swan influenced from the Gampola era) an old man in dead winter, a Yaka mask and a scull with an unconventional skied Mohawk hairdo.

He dabbles in oil and even sculptures but says his favourite medium is charcoal and pencil.

He's currently gathering the best of his work for an exhibition, some of which is 'traditional Sri Lankan with a twist.' "I like Yakas, fresco stuff, I'm doing a series on Ramaanya, a different take on it," he says and when he's not painting or saving lives, it's rock and metal music or big fish and animals that grab his attention.

The Native Sri Lankan, Chitral "Chity" Somapala (CIVILIZATION ONE) broke into the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Scene in 1996, and has recorded, toured, and made guest appearances with several bands around the world, including AVALON, FARO, FIREWIND, and RED CIRCUIT, to name a few.

His unmistakable style of singing combines the passion of blues and soul, with the heaviness of hard rock and heavy metal. Chity has been compared favorably to Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell + Dio) and Klaus Meine (Scorpions), and he has established himself as one of the leading heavy metal vocalists in the business today.

Chity is currently teaching vocals and bass guitar at Modern Music School in Trier, Germany as well as working as a session vocalist for different acts, and concentrating on his own band, CIVILIZATION ONE, who released the critically acclaimed "Revolution Rising" album in 2007.

Unleashing pure dynamite chemistry is what Karmic Sulphur is known for when they wreak havoc on stage. They obviously have nothing to do with state-of-the-art laboratory experiments, but are a force to reckon with.

A morbid cum psychedelic mayhem producing outfit, Karmic Sulphur comprises of Nuwan, Thushara, Sathyajith and the Abbas brothers - Shan and Rizan. Leading them to the foray, is metal rocker Thushara and his brow -piercing whipped well with his stentorian scream.

Shan is drummer boy to the band while Rizan manages the lead guitar the right rocking way. Sathyajith is the multi-talented Bass man while Nuwan perfects the rhythm guitar in full swing. Karmic Sulphur is the brainchild of Nuwan and particularly, Shalindra Rathnasinghe.

The name was carved with a flash of inspiration from Shalindra's brother's Periodic Chemistry table. Another aspect of the story includes the discovery of the Abbas brothers where their meeting was predestined with the rest at a concert rehearsal. Sathyajith came following a friend's recommendation.

The soul of their music is noted by Nuwan, "Everyone has their own talent and we blend in everything together." It was at the ONSTAGE 2006 finals when these dudes revealed themselves to an unsuspecting public for the first time. Even though they were the last band standing and really didn't clinch any title as such, they somehow proved their worth by strutting their stuff, never giving up.

Giving the low-down of their maiden track 'No Potential', Nuwan emphasized, "Shalindra was inspired for this song when someone came up to him and told him that the band had 'No Potential' and this was how the song was made". Undeterred by this comment, not only is Karmic Sulphur a right royal rocking band, many rocker ravers crave their mayhem music today.

The guys have cooked up three songs written by Shalindra titled 'Sleeping Suicide', 'Breach' and the more popular rock.lk mp3 download 'Morphine'. Two more songs 'Jam the Method' and 'Paper Burns Slow' will also be revealed very soon. They are influenced by zillions of bands but off the crust, they like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, The Doors, Alice in Chains, Perfect Circle and Marilyn Manson.

According to them, "We are working on composing new material for our album which be released sometime this year". These boys will dedicate the album to founder, Shalindra who is studying in USA at the moment.

Whilst on their musical journeys, they have not given up their academic gymnastics. Shan is a reputed banker (or so we think) whilst Thushara is a budding journalist, this writer's 'stiff competition' (NOT!). Nuwan has just graduated as an architect and Rizan is into Telecommunications Engineering. Sathyajith is a budding medico cutting his teeth at the medical college.

Advice given by Karmic Sulphur, "Be patient and try to hold your own". Also, do something different from the mainstream rock industry, they say. They have been pretty consistent in playing at gigs like 'Distorted' and the Soul Skinner farewell concert.

Funeral In Heaven is proud to announce the release of the Demo Single 'Janaani Janmabhumisca Svargadapi Gariyasi'.

The track is a narration inspired by the famous 'Vijitha Pura Satana' (Duttagamini(161-137 BC)-Elara war) and dedicated to the 10 of the greatest warriors in Sri Lankan history; Nandhimitra, Suranimala, Bharana Mahasona, Theraputtabhya, Gotahbaya, Gotaimbara, Vasabha, Velusumana and Phussadeva.This is also the slowest of our compositions so far, which also lyrically carries Sanskrit text. This track is one of the many chapters from the concept debut album, which is focused on primarily the war,The ambiances conjured were under a specific theme and concept, thecommencement and ending of the great 'Vijitha Pura Satana'. Soundscapes have been used according to the authentic chronicle, ex.- The 'chaturaṅga senawa' which literally translates to the four divisions of the army, 'ath, as, riya, paabala' (elephants, infantry, chariots, cavalry). The track was first performed at "Silencing the Machine" last April '08.

Thesong which is available for Download below, is not in its complete splendor as for now. We have decided not to release the complete version till the release of the album, this version, which shall include Sri Lankan Oriental Instrumentation among many other things will appear on the debut Funeral In Heaven album.

One of my friends said about Jägerbombs " It's funny how it plays withyour emotions. One second you are so down because of the hard liquor,but the next you are hyper as hell because of the sugar in the RedBull. F*cking Jägerbombs!" And that's exactly how I feel as I writethis article.

I've been away from Sri Lanka-my birth place- for more than 6 monthsnow. And yes, I saw bands I absoloutely adore,met awesome people I'vebeen looking upto as inspirations since the times I could remember. Butthis year I also missed some of the highlights in the Arrack (a SriLankan alcoholic beverage distilled from the sap of Coconut) soaked,curry smelling history of Sri Lankan metal.

So going through a spasm of mixed emotions right now.

Civilization One

Something I sadly had to miss was Civilization One, as they played livein the TNL Onstage concert.Native Sri Lanka and Ex-Firewind,Avalon, RedCircuit man, Chitral "Chity" Somapala and his multi-nationalCivilization One, gave Sri Lanka her first taste of live,InternationalMetal.

And I missed it!!!

I mean, it is not too often you find serious minded,"not ultra-cheesy"power metal, and this band is just that! It is very serious art, withamazing musicianship in all departments, not to mention the wee bit ofpride we have for this band as Sri Lankans.

And I missed it!!! I missed headbanging with my favorite dark skinned, metalheads!

A Daed Rose Wails For Light-brand new single by local heavy-weights Stigmata

Although I missed the launch of it, thanks to myspace I was able tolisten to the new single by a Sri Lankan band that is cable of givingyou multiple orgasms, leaving you in a seizure but wanting more.

I personally, and many online communities dedicated for Heavy Metalhave often described Stigmata's music as progressive metal with anobvious thrash core and massive vocal variation.

Stigmatahave been taking the recording process of their third full length albumpretty slowly, but the new single "A Dead Rosew Wails For Light" reallyspeaks why and promises a more technical, well produced album than everbefore. As an individual who has followed this band since its infancy,I know how this band has expanded its creative scope with everysingle,EP, and album released. Every record has been better producedthan the previous with better song writing and musicianship. With everyrecord Suresh's vocal range seems to grow by an octave or two more asAndrew's solos keep getting faster and explores more musical elementsthan before. Tenny's riff vocabulary keeps growing and the band'soverall sound moves a notch higher in quality with every step of theway.

The new single, unquestionably still retains the classic Stigmata soundof ultimate Thrashy-ness. Suresh still balances his high-pitched voicewith that "extreme" element as only a few vocalists do. Andrew'ssoloing is ofcourse nothing short of "neck-breaking" as the new BassistJaveen-affectionately called "Jack Sparrow" for his pirate-resemblinglooks- does some amazing bass work over the ever-thrashy drumming ofJackson, and Tenny's riffing. The rise of "HELA" Metal and the noise scene

I'll start with noise.This has been said a million times, and here you hear it again.

Noise isn't for everybody. Let's not make this an oppurtunity todiscuss the "musical" qualities of noise.Save it for your employer!Having said it is not for everybody, it is a tad bit suprising to seehow many noise projects have pooped out from nowhere after the successof the likes of STALLAGH, given that noise is a pretty oldgenre-again,let's not debate about "genre",it gets tiring!

Anyways,yes it's been out there for sometime. Japan's Merzbow has beendoing it since the late 1970's I think, and arguably Whitehouse andSonic Youth and the likes can be considered as inspirations. However,the lack of craftsmanship is quite obvious in some of the independantprojects. But lately in Sri Lanka, there has been a huge rise forappreciation of noise,hence resulting in some bands,especially thosefrom the Black Metal wing, incoporating noise elements quitesuccessfully inot their music.

PLECTO ALIQUEM CAPITE deserve a mention. Again, if you are not a fan ofnoise, you will not enjoy this. But they definetely have somethinggoing on and if you want to check it out,here's the myspace.

Now about the rise of Hela Metal. The term Hela in Sinhala-the nativeSri Lankan language-refers to the nationality of the majority SriLankans.Now this word literally means "Lions' blood", I will not boreyou with the folk stories about the term,but I think to have a genre bythat name is a pretty sweet deal I think.

Anyhow,I think the sub-genre was born when Sri Lankan Black Metallers Funeralin Heaven decided to explore new paths with their and startedincoporating Sri Lankan elements not only the music but in their songwriting too. The lyrics are highly inspired by Sri Lankan history,Ancient Wars etc...Frontaman Chathuranga Fonseka claims of extensivereasearch prior to writing songs, and as an individual who has beenwith the local metal scene for a long time you can expect no less thanquality music from him and his band. Though the band has been doing this for quite sometime, a whole newbreed of "Hela" Metal bands was born this year. The bandRaaksha(literally meaning "Devil" in Sinhala) captures the whole "Hela"element into a more Folkish context with their use of traditionaldrums,Native Sri Lankan lyrics,spells etc..The band recently releasedtheir virgin single "Sidhapathini,which has a Sri Lankan chanterchanting a spell in the background. The single is suggested more to thepsychedelic crowd as it certainly contains an unexplicable flow whichcan be best described as trippy. The odd noise groove is defintelythere too. The track also features Marlin "Beelzebub"Jayakody,themastermind behind RAAKSHA playing tradional "YAK BERA",a percussion instruments from Sri Lanka.

A new porject,Milk Drop Revalation has caught my attention. They tooproduce music inspired by patriotism,history etc...but uniquely themusic contains more of an ambient element,as opposed to heavy usage ofnoise. Ofcourse there's a fair bit of noise involved,but the musicalanatomy is rooted more with Black Metal with the raw vocals anddistinctive guitar distortion.

Well,that's how Lankan Metal has been in my eye. So all in all, I thinkit's been a pretty sweet year,and with Stigmata's record coming andbands like Funeral in Heaven and RAAKSHA going through th recordingphase,I have high expectations for next year from the local boys.

I have been waiting for something like this to come across my desk.

Sri Lankan black metal.

As much as an anomaly as that may appear to be it isn’t quite the aberration it may seem having artists from countries like this committing themselves to the more extreme genres of metal.

Sri Lanka itself boasts a tight knit community of black and death practitioners with names like Spleen Saint, Forsaken, Old Castles Massacre and Forlorn Hope serving as part of this unholy congregation and whilst the region is scarcely about to bother the world leaders in black metal for global domination it is vigilantly going about business making some truly terrifying music.

This bizarre and compelling little offering here is the five piece EP 'Atrocities' by a three man outfit known as Plecto Aliquem Capite whose moniker translates to Suffer Capital Punishment and for the untrained and uninitiated, listening to the hellacious clamour of their anguished compositions will prove to be a savage punishment to be suffered indeed.

Plecto Aliquem Capite are mostly formed by members of some of the other notable and previously referred to bands in the Sri Lankan scene with vocalist Buddhika hailing from Forlorn Hope and drums/programming man Kasun also doing time in Spleen Saint.
The trio are rounded out by Nightmare on guitars and violin, and while the band themselves may define their sound as 'depressive black metal' their cataclysmic distorted shrouds of 'music' encompass components of doom, drone, experimental and noise genres as well.

Running for a fistful of seconds beyond the quarter of an hour length 'Atrocities' starts off on a stormy unhinged note and only dips deeper into a madhouse of lunacy as it advances.

The one minute plus opening sequence that is 'Emaciate' is a murky soundscape in which thunderstorms reside, roiling within a suffocating dark atmosphere.
This grows more and more oppressive with the addition of gusts and howls of blustery wind and then horrendous interjections of piercing screams and bubbling monstrous vocal work.

Brief and ominous it has nothing on the sheer wall of tormented terror that looms up to take its place in the depressive and anguished shape of consequential track 'I'.
Six and a half minutes of completely deranged arrangements (or lack thereof as the case may be) constitute this creaking croaking feedback filled monstrosity with its painfully sluggish wallowing and unhinged vocal caterwauling.

'I' is a deeply disturbed paranoid schizophrenics nightmare embodied in music, principally composed of a frightening array of voicings, rasping, screaming, screeching and howling over a faint background shadow of plodding drums and funeral doom guitars and the noise based elements will weed out the weak in no time.

Only the very dedicated to this type of bleak black ordeal will be able to see out this cataclysmic inferno through its grim dirges to its gargled Nattefrost like finish.

The twisted torture continues unabated with the harsh suffocating dissonance and droning atmospherics of 'Moses'.

As equally scary as its predecessor it drapes a cloying cloak of noisescapes over its listeners, thudding drums and barbs of guitar persistently dragging behind the omnipresent vocal hell.

There is nothing of speed residing in the dark confines of 'Moses', just choking gasps, hideous cackles and screeches spreading like an insidious black cancer over all and sundry.

Just over three minutes into this distorted maelstrom of ugliness and a few moments of clearer guitar battle their way to the fore before howls of anguish beat the instruments back down into submission, though some more defined riffs with a bit of bite to them arc out of the black soup as it heads towards its conclusion.

Finalising the quarter hour of claustrophobic dismay (following on from the ambient white noise interlude of 'Atrophy') is the EPs standout track 'Broken Glass Fuck'.

Mostly eschewing the elements of drone that saturated all the former songs 'Broken Glass Fuck' is a fast moving beast sparked by a weird little melody that leads into a pulverising riff.

Death metal meets black in the instrumentation here along with some nods to thrash in the serrations of guitar and an almost industrial vibe at times.

The vocals are a freakish conglomeration of Nattefrosts sneering rasp and the croak of Abbath and mesh extremely well with the tempestuous drum programming and guitar work.

There’s a little bit of everything blended into this composition, even an unearthly lead break scrambling atop the buzz of dissonant rhythm.

I understand that this particular track was merely an avenue of experimentation for Plecto Aliquem Capite and any further recordings by the band will still be sitting primarily in the depressive drone/noise field but hopefully they will further explore this faster brutaller side as well for that’s what really appeals to me most and possibly will to others also.

'Atrocities' is a dark, raw, often frightening visceral experience that fans of droning murky harshness should certainly look into, and if you have an interest in the global extreme metal scenes Plecto Aliquem Capite are a unusual representative flying the flag for Sri Lanka.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

ARISE is currently passing its production stage and the directors are hastily putting up the material which suggest that the film will be ready for release before the middle of this year.

Paranoid Earthling - Bringing Down The Sun

Music is a bridge between people that can transcend differences and prejudice and unite people, especially in countries that are torn apart by war and experiencing conflict transformation. It is a medium that especially appeals to young people. In the case of Sri Lanka, it reaches out to a generation that has been born into and grown up with the war and conflict.

Young Asia Television (YATV), in collaboration with the Global Partnership for the Prevention for Armed Conflict (GPPAC), has produced a music video to commemorate International Peace Day on the 21st of September 2008. Until we inhabit a different world the International Day of Peace must be embraced as an opportunity to reflect on what's happening around us, how far we have come and how much further we have to go.

Bringing Down the Sun an original song written and preformed by the rock band Paranoid Earthling, highlights the impact of conflict on youth in Sri Lanka. Paranoid Earthling is made up by Mirshad, Dhanushka, Asela and Shanka, four young musicians from Kandy, with 7 years of experience and a loyal fan base among urban Sri Lankan youth.

Recognizing that few opportunities exist in Sri Lanka for musicians to explore their talent and create new songs, YATV and GCPAC embarked on this initiative to promote peace, through the power of youth and music. The music video especially targets urban youth in Sri Lanka and among the Sri Lankan diaspora in other countries.

YATV is committed to supporting peace and conflict resolution through the media, while GPPAC believes in creating a perception shift to the response to conflict from reaction to prevention. This music video is one of several produced by the organizations and will be featured on YATVs weekly peace programmes, No War Zone, Sathi and Vilippu. The music video can also be accessed on-line on the YATV and GPPAC websites and on YouTube. The soundtrack will also be featured on popular local English radio stations.

The song will hopefully inspire young people to take an active stand on peaceful conflict resolution, so that their generation will finally know what it means to live in a country where guns are silent.

Paranoid Earthling was established in early 2001 with Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Mirshad Buckman, Bassist Asela, Drummer Shanka and his brother & Rhythm Guitarist Dhanushka. 6 months down the line Paranoid Earthling made their first appearance in an islandwide competition in Sri Lanka’s Capital City of ‘Colombo’. Since then Paranoid Earthling’s rise to the spotlight of Sri Lankan original rock music has been unsurprisingly quick. The electrifying live performances and gutty originality that stems from their multi-faceted brand of rock has gained them an avid following. Picture 90’s grunge/post grunge interspersed with 70’s retro/blues and elements of punk and funk tweaked in for good measure, Paranoid’s genre is their own – hard to define and easy to like.

Coming from a conservative country where so called leaders thrive to ban and censor realism from the masses - while profiting from war, Paranoid Earthling uses their music as a vehicle to express their views on liberation, independance and free thinking.

The band’s 1st release was their three track EP (Rock and Roll is My Anarchy) which conquered Sri Lanka’s premier rock chart TNL SL Top Ten with each song finding its way to the top of a series of local charts. The EP had their 1st Recorded Single “Pull Me Under”(2002”), “Rock ‘n Roll Is My Anarchy” (2005) & “69” (2005) which are all radio staples in Sri Lanka.

Currently the band has completed all their tracks for their Full length Debut album which will be launched later this year.

Paranoid Earthling is a core member of the pioneering, non-profit organization Rock Company whose tireless efforts has firmly established a platform for Original Sri Lankan Rock Music.

Inhale Mary is a four-piece melodic metal band formed in 2007 by it's frontmen Mithila Mangedarage and Nadeesha Cabral., in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The band had been previously known as 'Engraved' and 'The Executioners Asylum'. The band comprises of Nadeesha Cabral as the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist and producer., Mithila Mangedarageas the lead guitarist and vocalist, and Naveen Ranwalage as the Percussionist and Drummer. Their music had been heavily influenced by the likes of Metallica, Godsmack, Bullet for my valentine, Codeseven, Limpbizkit, System of a Down, Alterbridge, Evanecense and Alice in Chains. The band members refer to artists like U2, Rolling Stones, Scorpions, Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana and the Sri Lankan metal arena legend Chitral Somapala as their major inspirations..

The name 'Inhale Mary', originally comes from the term 'Inhale Mary Jane', where 'Mary Jane' corresponds to Marijuana. But the band declines any consumption of the drug and strictly points that the whole term is something different than 'what meets the eye'. As they put it, "Inhale Mary was one of the most metaphorical names that anyone could have come up with.. Atleast in the way we use it.. Mary signifies people like Magdalene and Jane., who had been wronged by the things outside of their circle of influence, world orders to be precise. We are not trying to start up arguments about myth and reality or the divinity of the Christ here. That's none of our business. It's just that people are forced to believe in lies and myths in this world, that are truthfully nothing like they(undefined) assume. And we are just trying to 'inhale' the thruth down-under, hidden, just pure fact. Nothing else..."

Formed in the early dawn of 2008, Beelzebub and Deshapriya came together with a concept. A concept which Raaksha Projects. The concept of projecting the beauty and atrocity of ancient realms to modern day society. The unique genre of Pure Hela Metal is charactarised by furiously shredded guitar riffs with bowel shaking bass and animalistically decimated drum lines with Inhuman Shrieks and growls.

Raaksha disowns any other brand of hela metal, be it Shri metal or Hela black metal. We stay true to Hela Metal alone. As in the times of old, we hold our banner up high and take no prisoners.

Raaksha is influenced by the deep dark sounds of Blackened Doom and Old school Black Metal, characterized by screeching vocals, thundering double bass sounds that blend with melodic guitar solos, raw guitar rhythms and traditional Sri Lankan percussion.

This band follows no style or guideline in bringing out the music in them, yet behave diurnal and nocturnal to achieve their one goal of appeasing their hunger for solace. MDR comprises of Tharindu (vox), Roshan (guitar) and Nigel ( drums) from Sri Lanka, currently scattered around the globe, who would toss thier share of music from one continent to another over the internet in the name of a song.

With powerful vocals and lyrics, that go with mystifying sound, the band moves ahead through their many challenges . The band has already released two singles called ‘Apeirophobia’ and ‘The Great Hills of Candae’ on the Sri Lankan alternative rock site, www.rock.lk; continuing to win recognition.

All recordings have been done without the band members uniting in one studio. They may not be the usual experimental band that sinks in and takes you over, but rather skims though one’s brain encoding its own ambiguity and brings them out to present on a sound canvas. The band listens…
